2012 Toyota RAV4 Limited Road Test Review

As I climbed into the RAV4 that Toyota loaned me last week I was reminded that this is one very experienced crossover. Thinking It was seven years ago that Toyota invited me to Cambridge, Ontario to put it through its paces, a day that included a short off-road jaunt over the rugged tract of farmland in nearby Woodstock, at that time designated for the assembly plant that has since produced it. Of course, Toyota has updated the RAV along the way with a few styling tweaks here and mechanical improvements there, but more or less it's the same SUV today as it was in 2005. That's saying something....

As I climbed into the RAV4 that Toyota loaned me last week I was reminded that this is one very experienced crossover. Thinking 2012 Toyota RAV4 Limited AWD It was seven years ago that Toyota invited me to Cambridge, Ontario to put it through its paces, a day that included a short off-road jaunt over the rugged tract of farmland in nearby Woodstock, at that time designated for the assembly plant that has since produced it. Of course, Toyota has updated the RAV along the way with a few styling tweaks here and mechanical improvements there, but more or less it's the same SUV today as it was in 2005.

That's saying something. After all, a vehicle has to be very good to maintain such a long lifecycle and still remain one of the industry's top sellers. It has to have styling that manages to stay the test of time too, and by all accounts the design still looks agreeable from all angles. Toyota updated its grille, front fascia and taillights, plus a few other details for model year 2009, and

then modified the grille again in 2011, so this 2012 model is pretty much the same.

Likewise its interior might not have the flash of some more recently redesigned rivals, but despite its over design not having changed one iota since inception it doesn't look stale. The plastics are mostly hard, but the textures are nice and fit and finish good. My tester featured top-line Limited trim, which now includes leather upholstery and chrome interior accents plus a nice new 6.1-inch colour touchscreen with navigation, although the backup camera is still integrated into the auto-dimming rearview mirror. The 6-CD audio system with XM satellite radio is pretty strong, Bluetooth easy to set up and use, proximity sensing Smart Key with push-button ignition a nice upscale touch, and dual-zone automatic climate control oh-so good at keeping things cool on a

hot summer's day. It took me a while to get the 8-way powered driver seat set up just the way I liked it, but that had more to do with a particularly bad week for my aching back than the seats themselves. Once I had them right, they were as comfortable as I remembered them to be in previous RAV4 testers, with really effective lumbar support. Optitron gauges in my line of sight and tilt and telescopic leather-wrapped steering wheel in hand, I was ready to hit the road.

It's the way the RAV4 drives that will win you over. It's not all that sporty, especially in 179-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder trim, but it takes off quickly enough and holds its own in the corners if the need for speed arises. More so, the RAV is just plain easy to live with. Its light steering makes negotiating

traffic or parking garages an afterthought, and its suspension does a great job of absorbing untoward bumps and potholes. Toyota fits 17-inch rims and 225/65R17 all-season rubber on its Limited model, which might not be as enjoyable through the corners as the 18s I tested previously on the Sport, but they certainly are compliant through the rough stuff.

You hear me talking about rough stuff and probably think I was off-roading the RAV4, but that wasn't the case. I'm referring to inner city streets and alleys that in some parts of my town make you feel as if you're scaling Cadillac Hill on California's Rubicon Trail. You can take to less traveled path in the RAV thanks to pretty decent ground clearance of 190 millimetres (7.5 inches), but there's no low gear

range and little undercarriage protection, so I'd keep it on the mild side if I were you.

What the RAV4 is best at is carrying people and cargo, with the former benefiting from considerable legroom front and rear and more headroom than you'll likely ever need, not to mention reclining seats front and rear. Your cargo will be well cared for too, in nicely finished carpeted rear quarters that offer up 1,015 litres (35.9 cubic feet) behind the second row, or about the size of two midsize sedan trunks, and 2,074 litres (73.2 cubic feet) when you fold those 60/40-split seatbacks down. Toyota provides handy latches on each side of the cargo bay that should add convenience in theory, but you'll have to first remember to slide the front seats far enough forward before getting out or you'll just have to walk back to the driver's and/or front passenger's door to do so later, or they won't lay

flat. Once lowered the front seats can easily slide back to a comfortable driving position. Alternatively you could remove the headrests from the rear seats before dropping the second row, which will probably require you to walk around to the back doors to do so as it's a fairly good stretch from the tailgate. Another small inconvenience had me cursing the cargo cover clips that supposedly attach to the rear headrest supports so as not to dangle annoyingly behind the seats. They're dreadfully difficult to put on and then don't necessarily stay attached after all your hard work. Hopefully, on both counts, more convenient solutions are forthcoming.

Getting access to that cargo brings up the only major flaw in the RAV's design, its side-swinging

rear door. The door serves a purpose, to carry the full-size spare (my Limited model with a nice hard-shell cover) and thus allow for more room inside, but it's large and cumbersome compared to a liftgate, plus it's hinged on the right side thus blocking access to the curb when parallel parked. On the positive the RAV4 can carry up to 375 kilos (825 lbs) of payload and can tow a trailer that weighs up to 680 kilograms (1,500 lbs) with the four-cylinder or 1,587 kg (3,500 lbs) if you ante up for the 269-horsepower 3.5-litre V6, that incidentally also adds downhill assist control and hill-start assist to the RAV's very long list of standard safety features, plus lets you order a third row of seats.

Of course, going with the V6 won't help you at the pump where the four-cylinder earns more happy points. Despite only having a four-speed automatic

the RAV4 gets a claimed 9.5 L/100km in the city and 6.9 on the highway in base front-wheel drive form, or 9.7 and 7.2 with all-wheel drive. That's not best in class, but it's better than the RAV's V6 that gets a claimed 10.9 city and 7.6 highway. The V6's 5-speed automatic helps keep it within striking distance.

Yes, in its sixth model year with a seventh fast approaching, it's probably time for a RAV4 redesign, although there's something to be said for the "epic reliability" a well-proven model can offer. Toyota's smallest SUV is certainly dependable, and along with its other commendable attributes is still a force to be reckoned with in the compact crossover segment.
